At long last, opening day of the 2021-22 NHL regular season is upon us, and what better way to kick off a new season than with an extension in the works for one of the league's brightest young stars?

According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Montreal Canadiens are nearing a long-term extension with pending RFA forward Nick Suzuki.

The term is expected to be 8 years and AAV of the contract is $7.875M, which is a bargain, given how much Suzuki means to the Habs and the role he's been cast in early on in his young NHL career. The total value of the deal is $63M.

Suzuki was, of course, the main piece that came back to the Habs in the trade that sent former Canadiens sniper Max Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights back in September of 2018.

The 22-year-old was drafted in the 1st round, 13th overall by the Golden Knights back in 2017. He made his NHL debut with the Habs in 2019-20, posting 41 points in 71 games in his rookie season. It took him just 56 games to equal that production this past season.

Tidy piece of work by Habs GM Marc Bergevin here.
